‘A Photographic Tableaux of Distant Memories’  concerns with my evolving relationship with Vietnamese cultural values and identity as an international student living abroad. Shaped by my immense nostalgia and an acute awareness of my privileged upbringing, the body of work is a meditation of Vietnamese identity in the ever changing global landscape that I’m a part of. Through staged and cinematic photographs of significant rituals, cultural activities and social gathering in New York City, I recapture my comforting memories of home in Vietnam. Such photographs are contrasted with intimate documentation of my visit home in Vietnam and provide a well rounded expression of my Vietnamese cultural identity. More importantly, the body of work reflects the familial ties and collectivism that is very rooted in Vietnamese culture. In the end, the project is an autobiographical interpretation of the enduring significance of Vietnamese cultural values which follows me everywhere I go.
